When Andritz makes sense—and when it doesn't

- You want standardized spares and documentation across multiple sites or decades.
Andritz is probably overkill when:
- The application is non-critical, low-duty, and easily replaced off the shelf.
- You have a full engineering team that performs its own retrofits and reconditioning.
- Your capital policy explicitly prioritizes lowest first cost, and you accept the maintenance risk.
Look, I'm not saying budget suppliers are always the wrong answer. I'm saying that in our operation—continuous processes with a downtime cost of roughly $6,800 per day—the premium option paid for itself. Switching our dewatering line to Andritz cut energy and maintenance costs by about $31,000 over 18 months, roughly 23% of that line's historical budget. Those are numbers I can defend to anyone.
The TCO checklist I use before every capital order
- Total delivered price: equipment + freight + rigging + commissioning. Not the base quote.
- Energy consumption per unit of output, based on vendor guarantees and third-party test data.
- Maintenance intervals and consumable costs—ask for the actual replacement schedule.
- Spare parts lead time and technical support response time.
- Warranty claim history or references from operations similar to yours.
- Residual or transfer value, if the equipment might be repurposed or resold.
One more thing: our procurement policy now requires quotes from three vendors minimum, but the final decision runs through the TCO model rather than the price column. It doesn't add much time to the process, and over the past three years it has saved us roughly $84,000 in avoidable lifecycle costs. If that sounds boring, good. Boring is profitable.
